Detroit Outdoors
Detroit Outdoors is a collaborative of the Sierra Club, Detroit Parks and Recreation, and the YMCA of Metro Detroit that connects Detroit communities with the local natural environment and invites youth to spend more time outdoors in all seasons. A frequent destination in Detroit is Rouge Park, Detroit’s largest park at 1,184 acres which contains beautiful sections of river and forest to explore. Nestled within the park is Detroit's only campground, a 17.4 acre natural area called Scout Hollow.
The Sierra Club arm of Detroit Outdoors, Detroit Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO), works mainly with the Fauver-Martin Boys & Girls Club in Highland Park and has its gear library in Highland Park. D2N is providing donated outdoor clothing and gear for the gear library. This gear allows access to outdoor experiences not otherwise accessible. During the Spring/Summer 2020 The Sierra Club and The Fauver-Martin Boys & Girls Club offered free memberships to their virtual clubhouse, which included weekly activities in which youth were engaged. In winter 2022 Detroit Outdoors and Building Better Men teamed up to introduce ice climbing to their respective participants.
