Summer 2024

Students in the temporary learning center.

D2N has identified Jana Bikash Basic School in Thuli Barkh as our first school to be rebuilt following the November 2023 earthquake. The school serves 80 low-income students, ages 4-10, from 70 families in three communities. The students are currently housed in a temporary learning center constructed by UNICEF.

We are in the process of finalizing the budget and determining the scope of the local community’s contribution. D2N requires community investment of some kind (materials, labor, funds) in every project.

Happy Spring! Planning continues for the rebuilding of earthquake-safe schools in Nalgad Municipality, Nepal. BlinkNow is D2N's partner in our earthquake relief efforts. BlinkNow's primary endeavor is the Kopila Valley Children's Home, an orphanage. Team Alex, one of D2N's longtime partners in Detroit, is sharing their compassionate nature and love of biking by sponsoring the Kopila Valley Bike club at the orphanage. The sponsorship includes bicycles, helmets and gear for the children as well as weekly maintenance by a mechanic. The spirit of Alex Graham lives on. Watch a video; the kids thank Team Alex at the beginning of the video.

Earthquake Update, 12.19.23

During his time in Western Nepal Richard, along with our partners BlinkNow and HAPSA Nepal, delivered much-needed supplies (sanitation kits, jackets, blankets, food, thermoses and sleeping bags) to two villages. After gathering input from the affected communities they developed an Earthquake Relief Plan. Details of the plan can be found here.

Nepal Earthquake, November 2023

This handout photo provided by Nepal Prime Minister's Office shows an earthquake-affected area in northwestern Nepal, Saturday, Nov. 4, 2023. Helicopters and ground troops rushed to help people hurt in a strong earthquake that shook northwestern Nepal districts just before midnight Friday, killing more than 100 people and injuring dozens dozens more, officials said Saturday. On November 3, 2023 a powerful earthquake struck Western Nepal. Although the area is nowhere near Khotang, because of contacts and resources developed over the past 13 years, D2N is in a position to provide expeditious relief. We will be partnering with HAPSA, non-profit organization that has been working to strengthen health system in Nepal and BlinkNow Foundation, a non-profit already working in Western Nepal, to provide warm meals, a safe drinking water station, blankets, temporary shelters and other necessary items to help residents in Jajarkot get through the next few days and until longer term solutions can be found.
